Ingredients:
1 lb. (450 g) ground beef
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup beef stock
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon tomato paste
Salt and pepper to taste
2 sheets of puff pastry
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
For the Pie Crust:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter, cubed
1/4 to 1/2 cup cold water
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Pie Crust:
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Add the cold butter, and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add cold water until the dough comes together.
Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
2. Make the filling:
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, and cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
Stir in the flour and cook for another minute to thicken the mixture. Add the beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste.
Stir well to combine. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
Let the mixture simmer for about 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the filling is thick and flavorful.
Remove it from the heat and let it cool.
3. Assemble the Pies:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Roll out the pie crust dough on a floured surface and cut it into circles to fit your pie tins or muffin tins.
Line the tins with the pie crust, pressing gently to fit.
Fill each crust with the cooled meat filling.
Cut circles from the puff pastry sheets to fit the pie tops.
Place the puff pastry over the meat filling, and press the edges to seal.
Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden finish.
4. Bake the Pies:
Place the pies in the preheated oven and bake for about 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
5. Serve and Enjoy:
Let the pies cool slightly before removing them from the tin.
Serve hot, and enjoy these classic Aussie Meat Pies with ketchup or your favorite sauce.
These savory, delicious Aussie Meat Pies are perfect for any occasion and will take you straight to the streets of Australia. Enjoy your homemade Aussie meat pie!
